Don Siegel @ Film Forum

ITBK was at the Don Siegel fest the very first weekend, which means you still have 3 weeks and 5 days to get to Film Forum and take in at least one of his action classics. We lucked out because we caught Walter Matthau in Charley Varrick, a desert noir about a small-time crop duster turned bank robber who gets in over his head. You'd recognize his sidekick as the psycho from Dirty Harry, which Siegel directed the year before, catapulting Clint Eastwood to his iconic status and leaving box offices in smithereens. It's been a while since ITBK took in the original Dirty Harry (showing for one week only April7-13) but right now it's hard to beat good ol' Walter: he knocks off a bank with his leg in a cast, he drinks milk, he doesn't throw a single punch, yet still manages to get the girl & the cash. Make sure you don't miss The Shootist (John Wayne's final western, April 2 & 3) or Siegel's sci-fi masterpiece Invasion of the Body Snatchers (March 24-27) or any of the more obscure films, often presented as bargain-priced double features.
