Obscura Antiques & Oddities

Obscura shall forever remain as my favorite store...an incredible cabinet of all of the strangest, most amazing, beautiful & grotesque objects (sometimes downright creepy); it's like visiting the most perfectly condensed musuem, or like being in a novel or film and seeing the coolest shop and realizing it's reality and you ARE IN THE COOLEST SHOP. The proprietors, Mike & Evan, are super smart & friendly and have the most amazing taste, which is not always the case here in NYC shops! It is truly a destination...
Here's a few of the things we've picked up there over the years: a clown woodcut for printing circus posters, a depression-era watercolor of a kid scowling at his parents, a black Victorian skirt from 1880, two incredible light fixtures pulled from a saloon in Jersey, random old photos, a hundred-year-old door knocker in the shape of a hand--the list goes on.
The list of things I WANTED to buy but had to pass on is too long to even begin!

Sadly the shop closed down...it was a real bummer. WAIT!@#! HEY, IT'S BACK and you can check it out! They're having a PARTY and book reading for Lord Whimsy on Saturday, November 11th @ 8 pm. Just head on over to:
Obscura 280 East 10th Street Between 1st Avenue & Avenue A 212.505.9251
